Our school combines three assessment methods: Summative Assessment (Assessment of Learning), Formative Assessment (Assessment for Learning), and Self / Peer Assessment (Assessment as Learning) to conduct effective, high-quality assessments of students in a spiral and progressive manner, utilising a variety of feedback methods.
Effective Assessment Methods Include:
1. Feedback: Clear, timely, targeted, and positive.
2. Feed Forward: Aligning with learning objectives based on current learning situations to enhance future learning.
3. Scaffolding: Providing guidance and support for subsequent learning
Our school adopts the ten principles proposed by R. Berry (2014) to introduce assessments that promote learning, which include:
1. Assessment links teaching and learning.
2. Utilise a variety of assessment methods.
3. Select assessment methods that are beneficial to learning.
4. Encourage collaboration among colleagues.
5. Continuously assess students.
6. Involve students in the assessment process.
7. Use assessments to understand students’ learning.
8. Ensure students are aware of the assessment criteria.
9. Use feedback to guide students’ learning.
10. Analyse and report on students’ performance.
Additionally, based on the theory of Dr Yan Zi, elements of self-assessment and peer assessment have been incorporated. This is because the self-assessment process requires consistent meta-cognition, and the frequency of students engaging in deep learning is not less than that of teacher assessments. Through self-assessment tasks, students are encouraged to actively seek feedback and engage in self-reflection, which enhances their participation and positively impacts learning outcomes.
The three assessment methods are used interchangeably to achieve effective teaching and learning outcomes.
